Chapter 2 How Much Solar Costs in India (2026)

How Much Does Solar Cost in India in 2026?

A 3 kW on-grid solar system -- the most common size for a 2-3 BHK home -- costs Rs 1,70,000-1,90,000 before any subsidy. After the PM Surya Ghar central subsidy of Rs 78,000, your out-of-pocket cost is Rs 92,000-1,12,000. In Delhi, an additional Rs 30,000 state subsidy brings this to Rs 62,000-82,000.

System cost before subsidy (3 kW) Rs 1,70,000 -- 1,90,000
PM Surya Ghar central subsidy - Rs 78,000
Out-of-pocket (all states) Rs 92,000 -- 1,12,000
Additional Delhi state subsidy - Rs 30,000
Out-of-pocket (Delhi) Rs 62,000 -- 82,000

What is included at this price? Panels (Tier-1 brand, ALMM-listed), inverter (BIS IS 16221 certified), mounting structure, wiring, installation labor, net meter application coordination, PM Surya Ghar filing, and first-year monitoring. A quote that does not include all of these items is not comparable.

What IS included in a complete quote:

  • Panels (Tier-1 brand, ALMM-listed)
  • Inverter (BIS IS 16221 certified)
  • Mounting structure
  • Wiring
  • Installation labor
  • Net meter application coordination
  • PM Surya Ghar filing
  • First-year monitoring

What is NOT included in most quotes (and should be asked about):

  • Roof waterproofing (if needed)
  • Electrical panel upgrade (if your panel is old)
  • Additional cabling beyond the standard run length

Important about the subsidy timing: The Rs 78,000 subsidy arrives 60-120 days after commissioning -- not upfront. You pay the full amount at installation and receive the subsidy later.
