What Is PM Surya Ghar?

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a central government scheme launched on February 15, 2024. The government provides subsidies of up to Rs 78,000 to reduce the cost of rooftop solar installation for Indian homeowners.

Progress as of December 2025: 20.8 lakh+ installations completed across India. Target: 1 crore (10 million) installations by 2027. Total budget: Rs 75,021 crore. Helpline: 15555 (toll-free) and 1800-180-3333 (MNRE).

The scheme is real. The money is real. The subsidy has reached 20.8 lakh families. The process to claim it is genuinely complicated -- and that is where Suryam comes in.

Subsidy Amounts

System Size Central Subsidy
1 kW Rs 30,000
2 kW Rs 60,000
3 kW Rs 78,000 (Rs 60,000 for first 2 kW + Rs 18,000 for 3rd kW)
Above 3 kW Rs 78,000 (maximum -- same as 3 kW)

The maximum central subsidy is Rs 78,000, regardless of system size above 3 kW.

Are You Eligible?

You are eligible if you meet all of the following criteria:

  • You are an Indian citizen
  • You have a residential electricity connection (not commercial or industrial)
  • Your home is grid-connected (on-grid systems only -- hybrid and off-grid are NOT eligible)
  • The solar panels go on your roof (not ground-mounted)
  • This is your first PM Surya Ghar subsidy (one per household, linked to consumer number)
  • Your system uses ALMM-listed panels and BIS-certified inverters
  • Your installer is MNRE-empanelled
All Suryam systems use ALMM-listed, BIS-certified equipment. All Suryam installers are MNRE-empanelled through Aerem's certified partner network.

The Process -- What Actually Happens

The government portal says the process takes 30 days. Here is what actually happens, and what we do at each step.

1
Register on pmsuryaghar.gov.in
1 day
What the government says

Register with your mobile number, Aadhaar, and consumer number.

What actually happens

The portal frequently shows "Session Expired" errors. Mobile OTPs sometimes take 10-15 minutes. The consumer number format varies by state.

Suryam

We submit the registration on your behalf, verifying all details before entry.

2
DISCOM feasibility assessment
15-45 days
What the government says

Your DISCOM assesses whether your grid connection can support solar.

What actually happens

Timelines vary dramatically. Gujarat and Karnataka DISCOMs: 15-20 days. UP, Kerala, Tamil Nadu: 30-45+ days.

Suryam

We monitor your application status and follow up with your DISCOM weekly. You do not need to call anyone.

3
Install and upload documents
3-5 days installation + 1 day documents
What the government says

Upload commissioning certificate and invoice after installation.

What actually happens

Specific document formats are required. Errors here cause delays.

Suryam

Your installer uploads the correct documents directly through the portal. We verify everything before submission.

4
DISCOM net metering and inspection
7-30 days
What the government says

DISCOM installs net meter within 30 days.

What actually happens

15-30 days in most cities.

Suryam

We coordinate with DISCOM for the meter installation appointment.

5
Subsidy to your bank account
60-120 days after commissioning
What the government says

30 working days after commissioning.

What actually happens

60-120 days in most cases.

Suryam

We track your subsidy status. If it has not arrived within 4 months of commissioning, we escalate to DISCOM and MNRE on your behalf.

Common Problems -- and How Suryam Prevents Them

Problem Without Suryam With Suryam
Name mismatch (Aadhaar / bill / bank) Application rejected; figure it out yourself We check all documents BEFORE submission
Portal errors and session timeouts Try again, lose data We submit, you sign
DISCOM delays You wait, wondering We follow up weekly, escalate when needed
Wrong installer (not MNRE-empanelled) Subsidy rejected All Suryam installers are MNRE-empanelled
Net meter delay You chase DISCOM We coordinate
Subsidy not arriving You fight alone We escalate after 4 months
The #1 cause of rejections

Name mismatch between Aadhaar card, electricity bill, and Aadhaar-linked bank account. Even a single character difference (Smt. vs blank, hyphenated vs spaced surname) causes rejection. We verify this before we submit anything.

Documents Checklist

Gather these before we start:
